Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs.

In Evolution, provided that you have set up your accounts correctly, click on "File" and then on "Work Online".
Your ISP sets the port.

Thank you for your help. I have received all the mail left on the
server. My inbox has over 265 messages. Sending 1 email is the
problem. I followed all the instructions from my ISP. Server:
mail.gol.com username:
Plain..
I did enter the password once b4 my mail was received.
When I hit send the outbound message just sits there. What do you think?
Thank you very much,
Joe

In Evolution, go to Edit, Preferences. Highlight your mail account and go to "Edit". Under the "Sending Mail" tab check the following:
Set the outgoing Server Type to SMTP.
Set the Server to mail.gol.com.
Set the username to your FULL email address

Yes,

I had already done as you instructed.

Here's more info:

SECURITY: NO ENCRYPTION

AUTHENTICATION: PLAIN

I have tried using the LOGIN setting on Authentication.. didn't work.

THANK YOU

For Authentication, click the button next to that "Check for supported types" - that will cross out any unsupported protocols. Mine says Plain or Login and, like you, I chose Plain.

Is "Remember Password" ticked ? The password referred to here is your Server Password not the Ubuntu Login.

Server requires authentication should also be ticked.

Are both incoming and outgoing (POP and SMTP) server addresses set to "mail.gol.com" ?

THANKS again for trying.

Yes, I have tried clicking on "Check for supported types" and it seems as
though nothing happened.

Is "Remember Password" ticked ? Yes!

Server requires authentication should also be ticked. Yes!

Incoming is popmail.gol.com

SMTP is mail.gol.com

TIA

Your Outgoing mail setting should be:

Outgoing is smtp.gol.com.

Tell me if this works.

Joe, I just noticed that your incoming mail, which works, is set to popmail.gol.com. This leads me to think that the outgoing address is wrong. Please check the information provided by your ISP.

Should it be popmail.gol.com or smtpmail.gol.com ? What setting did you use for your nokia ?

Revision history for this message
JomadsinCebu (jomadscebu) said :

I have tried popmail.gol.com and smtpmail.gol.com as well.

On the NOKIA it is:mail.gol.com for the outgoing mail server

Security Ports:OFF

Port: 587

Evolution has no PORT setting.

I do not get an error message. The message just sits in the out box.

Also on my old MAC Powerbook the settings are the same and I can send and
receive.

GOL.comis a Japanese ISP. I'm not in Japan at this time, but that does not
effect the NOKIA nor the MAC.

Thank you for trying..

When I CHECK FOR SUPPORTED TYPES it takes minutes to get the result and
nothing in the list is lined out as it is lined out in the INCOMING SERVER.

The outgoing should be set to SMTP and mail.gol.com

You have stated above that you are using Ubuntu 6.10. Is that correct?

Ubuntu 6.10 ceased receiving support in April last year.

The version of Evolution that I use is 2.22.3.1.

Right.

SMTP

mail.gol.com

It must be my provider.

Joe, could you install Thunderbird to see if that works for you? You will find it in Add/Remove, Internet, Mozilla Thunderbird.

I am at a loss to explain why Evolution will not send your mail. If Thunderbird also cannot send it then it must be your Server.

So it seems that specifying the port number is the key.

If you want to resume using Evolution you will have to make the following change to your configuration:

In Evolution click on "Edit", "Preferences", double click on your account and open the "Sending Email" tab. Under "Server Configuration", next to "Server" append ":587" (without quotation marks) so that your server address reads: mail.gol.com:587

If that solves your problem, would you please mark this question as "Solved".
