unable to receive/send mail. can view in webmail only

Asked by brianm

unable to send/receive mail in Evolution, but can via webmail. I had 2 mail addresses one for original internet explorer pop account the other for broadband. I have reset info in Account Editor and added my second email address. When I send an email in Evolution from one of my addresses to the other firstly I get asked to verify password to my mail.talktalk.net user name, (entering to password given to me by my ISP is rejected and I'm asked to enter again or it changes screen to EVOLUTION ERROR> "Error while performing operation" host hookup failed smtp.talktalk.net Name or service not known
I can only open Evolution via Applications Evolution. If I try directly via Evolution icon I get message "Could not launch Application. failed to execute child process "/home/brian/troubleshoot.txt." Permission refused. My ISP does assist Linux users but confirms I have the correst password.Have I entered wrong info on set up, if so what what password is required.?.Why the error messages? Using latest Ubunto Liux downloads. Please help. Brianm

So sorry to be so thick and slow, but went into Applics. <Add/Remove but
could find no route to software mail server. Can I remove Evolution and
reinstal rechecking my entry details then? Omitted to say that when I try
to Send/Receive I get request for the password to the user name info. I
gave when setting up, (my phone No. and isp) but it wont accept the
password provided by my ISP. Had to try many times originally when setting
up to get it to accept it. Hope you can make sense of this. If not just
tell me how I can Remove Linux from my pc and I'll reinstall xp although
this will be a sad day for me.

Can now receive /send mail. simply removed the info in Authenticate Receiving mail section to clear fault. I am learning slowly and thanks Juan. STILL getting "COULD NOT launch Application" with "failed to execute child process"/home/ brian/truobleshoot.txt" when connecting direct to Evolution. Why?
