Evolution or any other email client for Exchange 2010

Asked by Arjuna Marambe

Hi,

I am using the latest Ubuntu version and trying to connect this to our Exchange Server which is running Exchange 2010. The client I am using is Evolution. I give in all the details but when I try to authenticate the system gets stuck nothing happens, it does not give me an error message either. I am not on the domain on which Exchange 2010 is running however I do provide a valid domain account.

Thanks
Arjuna.

Sorry I am new to Ubuntu (LINUX for that matter), I see an Exchange option when I try to configure the account so I assumed that evolution-exchange is already installed, is this not the case? if not from where can I download evolution-exchange?

you can install/check if is installed from Applications→Software→Center

But i prefer to use terminal to check if is already installed and if it is not installed to install it, so:

Open a Terminal from the menu Applications->Accessories->Terminal

Then type or better copy and paste a row a time then press enter:
(Tip: select the single row to copy then right click into the terminal and to quick paste click with middle button of mouse )

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get install evolution-exchange

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

Hope this helps

Also i forgot to tell you, in my previous sent terminal command:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

you will update/upgrade all your installed packages to the latest.

You can do the same update/upgrade check using the System → Administration → Update Manager pressing on Verify button and then installing packages if there are any.

Hi Marco,

I ran the steps you gave, When running the command

sudo apt-get install evolution-exchange

I got a message saying

evolution-exchange is already the newest version.

However when I try to connect to my Exchange Server (Exchange 2010) the application still hangs.

Thanks
Arjuna.

Exchange 2010 is still a very new program and therefore there is no support for it within Evolution at the time. You will have to use OWA (Outlook Web Access) for the time being.

Hi Rohan,

Sorry my mistake, I checked with our network guys and apparently it is Exchange 2007. Is this also not supported?

Thanks
Arjuna.

Hi Arjuna,

Exchange 2007 is supposed to be supported.

I point you to these resources:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=7904185&postcount=2

Make sure you have evolution-mapi package installed.

http://serverfault.com/questions/13056/configure-gnome-evolution-with-exchange-2007

I hope some of those resources help you find a solution, :)

Hi Arjuna,
This is the error I'm facing with Ubuntu 12.04 trying to connnect to Exchange 2010.

The Exchange server is not compatible with Exchange Connector. The server is running Exchange 5.5. Exchange Connector
supports Microsoft Exchange 2000 and 2003 only.

Is there likely to be an update to the connector soon? Could you direct me to a later thread??

Can you help with this problem?
