The selected printer 'default'could not be found

Asked by Donald Henry

My only printer is not responding to my command to print a document. The error message reads "the selected printer 'default' could not be found." I am very new to Ubuntu Linux since some geek technician installed it to solve the crashing of my beloved Windows XP last week. I have no clue how to resolve this issue. Thanks.

Hey Donald,

What type of printer do you have? You may need you drivers installed.
Does this only happen when trying to print a .pdf from evince. Can you print a standard txt file from gedit?

Dear Wojox:

I am sorry for delaying my response to your kind offer of help. I have been upto my ears in alligators created by my newly and poorly installed Ubuntu system that was installed a few weeks ago by some self-styled professional geek who decided that woulld be a better alternative to my Windows XP that crashed. These alligators are numerous errors including a large package of trojans that are more important than my printer.

Here are my answers to your questions:

--My printer type is a desk jet Lexmark Z705. No printer is listed in my Default Printer window. And, Ubuntu will not print to file either.

--What is evince? What is getit? And how do I find out what they are and how they should help me? My inability to print includes .pdf and anything else I desire to have a paper or file copy of.

--I will go to https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/evince/+question/105563 for feedback at your suggestion as soon as I can solve the MANY pages of errors transcribed in my notebook, as well at learn how to use this strange new Linux OS, and how to troubleshoot it until it works as designed by Linux engineers. When that will be is anyone's guess. If no solutions are found in that site I will contact you again. If a solution is found, I will send my feedback to https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/evince/+question/105563/+confirm?answer_id=0, and to you as well.

In any case, I will inform you of my results.

Thanks so much for your help!

Evince is a document viewer, gedit is a text editor

Can you help with this problem?
