Why can't I connect to MSN/Windows Live Messenger contacts in Empathy?

Asked by Tristram

I have added accounts in Empathy for MSN Messenger/Windows Live Messenger, Facebook Chat and Google Talk. I can see and chat with Facebook and Google contacts but all my MSN contacts show up as offline even when they're not and my status shows up as 'Offline' on their Windows clients. Any messages I send from Empathy don't go through.

I've tried de-activating, re-activating, removing and re-adding my MSN account details and each time Empathy reports it has connected successfully to Facebook, Google Talk and MSN.

I don't use instant messaging very often; I just want a set-and-forget arrangement so people can reach me if they want to without first having to convince friends and family to switch protocols. For that reason I don't want to have to install Pidgin, Emesene, aMSN, etc. and I also like the integration with the top panel menus in Lucid.

If anyone has experienced this before and filed a bug and/or posted a solution please point me in that direction.

Thanks

I can't confirm whether this issue is present in other versions of Empathy or Ubuntu, but for what it's worth I'm running Lucid 64bit.

I've added the PPA in that article and updated everything, logged out and in, restarted and still nothing.
Facebook Chat does seem to log in noticeably faster now though.

Sam,

I've already read question #105548 and as I said above I don't wish to install Emesene, I just want Empathy to work for all protocols.
As for your second link, telepathy-butterfly is already up to date. Empathy reports it is connecting successfully to the MSN protocol, I just can't see any of my contacts as online even when they are.

Following some of the tips on bug #255307 (linked), I uninstalled and reinstalled telepathy-butterfly (and dependants telepathy-core and telepathy-gnome) and it now connects successfully to all protocols as before but also displays online MSN contacts.

Before doing the above, I upgraded Empathy from 2.30.1.1 to 2.30.2 and the Linux kernel from 2.6.32-22 to 2.6.32-23 but neither of those changes helped.

The tweaks don't work for me. No matter what I do, EMpathy cannot connect to MSN. I have tired the various PPAs for Empathy, Telepathy etc; all to no avail.

I also see a segfault in "telepathy-haze" when trying to use SIPE from Empathy. Not sure if that is related.

Thanks! I had run updates around 1200 my time (honest) when I was trying the various combinations. "python-papyon" was not one that I recall needing updated. "Updated Manager" did report it when I forced a check just now and I can once again connect to MSN.

Now then...SIPE...grr.....
