The correct command is "sudo dpkg --configure -a". All lowercase and make sure the spaces are placed correctly.

Does this have to do with installing Sun Java JRE ? This was a part of the install process I found for installing flash-support.

      sudo apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree

then:
      sudo aptitude install sun-java6-jre sun-java6-plugin sun-java6-fonts

No, I,m not sure if you need all the following software sources, but if they are not enabled, they can't be downloaded, so you will not get all the stuff you need.

Launch the System -> Administration -> Software Sources. Check all boxes except 'enable source code' unless you are software developer. Be sure to check the “Software restricted by copyright or legal issues (multiverse)” box.

♦ open the Terminal, and execute the following commands (copy and paste them. sudo forces a password entry. If needed, use ctrl+c to copy and ctrl+v to paste) If the terminal refuses to comply, go to the reference web page listed in (), and work from there.:

      sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras
This will take a long time to complete. Press 'Enter' when asked to OK the permission option.

source, (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats)

  then:
♦ Then, add the GPG Key:

      wget -q http://packages.medibuntu.org/medibuntu-key.gpg -O- | sudo apt-key add -

      sudo apt-get update

      sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install medibuntu-keyring && sudo apt-get update

source, (http://psychocats.net/ubuntu/sources)

then:

Reboot. Open terminal and enter:

      sudo dpkg --configure -a

Then,
System -> Administration ->Synaptic Package Manager -Edit>Fix Broken Packages, and click Apply. Close the Manager.

I'll be interested to know if it works.

you may have filled up the /boot directory and need to manually delete
some of its contents. That is what happened to me earlier. I deleted
some and left the following and can now run dpkg. Let me see your
terminal results from running the command and maybe I can help further.

valerie@lc2000:/boot$ ls
