Have you installed "cups" already? Have you tried your printer to see if it 'just works' without anything extra being required?

Cups = Common Unix Printing System (i'm not sure what the "S" stands for but i think that's right. Install it while your printer is plugged in. Synaptic is good for installing things
https:/
Either search tool in synaptic should find cups and will hopefully drag in all the dependencies it needs to work your printer but "gtklp" and "xpp" are also quite handy to have if it doesn't already include those anyway. One is a neat gui called "Manage Print Jobs" which looks quite nice and seems to work better than the Windows one. I'm not sure what the other one does but since i am not sure which one provides the "Manage Print Jobs" i tend to get both. Also using a search tool in Synaptic might help you find other goodies for your printer.
You might find this guide handy for looking up odd things occasionally
https:/
and if you haven't already then working through this guide tends to sort out most multimedia issues, making sure you don't miss anything out
https:/
I tend to use proprietary stuff but hope to go completely OpenSource one day. The only multimedia that doesn't get sorted out is getting adobe's "flash player" for making YouTube work (and other web-based movies)
Hope that helps!
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Open Synaptic Package Manager and mark "cups" package for re-install and apply changes. Reboot is not required.

Yes, they miss out 1 crucial guide which might have helped a lot
https:/
Then i suspect that copy&paste might help a lot. Note the right-click paste from your mouse works. CtrlV doesn't work but mouse paste is always good ;)

It's not so hard as it looks. Just download iP1500 drivers from Canon site to your home folder and execute some commands in terminal. That's it!

I think it helps to give a quick link on how to access the command-line. Most of us had never used linux before using Ubuntu and it's often the same with people asking question in here. You did give a great link there and yes, once you are used to using the terminal it's quite easy but people who have only used Window (freedom from choice) have probably learned to be afraid of using the command-line not realising the linux one is soooo much easier (Tab key helps a lot halfway through commands and pathnames ;) )

Hi,
First please make sure to close all open programs, including all package managers like Synaptic, Add/remove programs, etc ...
Then please try this procedure:
Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications-
Terminal"
Step 2: Please COPY-PASTE each line below into the Terminal then hit <enter> after each line)
wget http://
sudo dpkg -i --force-
wget http://
sudo dpkg -i --force-
wget http://
sudo dpkg -i --force-
Step 3: Please post results (copy/paste terminal output from each command) on this thread
Step 4: Reboot pc, turn on printer, try to add printer driver and then try to print
Hope it helps,
Regards,
Mark

Hi :)
Superb, nicely done. In the future please start new threads for your questions rather than adding them onto existing threads. People tend not to read through old threads, especially ones marked "Solved"! Also questions often turn out to be completely different even tho they may appear to be identical at first.
Every forum and question/answers site seems to work slightly (or completely) different so do not worry about it this time. The main thing is that you fixed the problem! Congrats!! :)))
Many regards from
Tom :)
