hp 1018 printer not working after ubuntu 9.04 upgrade

Asked by Fred Dyck

hp1018 printer not working after ubuntu 9.04 upgrade. Aaron Albright recommended installing the plugin which made it work fine that day. Unfortunately the printer did not work the next day. When I ran hp-check -t it notified me that the plugin was not installed, that it was not able to communicate with device(code 12) and device was not found. I am attaching the info from the hp-check -t.

momanddad@Home:~$ hp-test -t
bash: hp-test: command not found
momanddad@Home:~$ hp-check -t

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the
HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies
are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro
supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball
has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode
will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

I checked the USB cables and plugs which seem to be ok. I don't know why it can't discover the printer device on the USB port. The mouse which is on a USB port works fine. I swapped the printer and mouse ports and the mouse still works fine but not the printer. Where do I look next?

I am sorry I did not convey properly that the printer is working fine now. The problem was corrected in one of your software updates.

Tom, Thanks for your interest. Unfortunately, Ubuntu came up with new upgrades that rendered my printer useless. Anup tried to help me, without success. I have been without use of my printer for two months now. I am strongly considering a new operating system for the use of my printer. Video downloads are another problem but that is not a priority now. I don't want to be a nuisance. If anyone wants to tackle my problem let me know. thanks for all the help in the past. Fred Dyck

Hi :)

Please re-post this as a new question
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+addquestion
perhaps also at
http://www.linuxquestions.org

Launchpad can only handle most recently asked questions and often the Answers Team races through all the shortest questions first so when you re-post please keep it very brief. You can always copy&paste this link back to this question so that people can see the detail you gave here
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cups/+question/70481

When i was answering questions in here it seemed the best answers were
given when the question was posted just as americans were getting back
from work. This was weird because most of the answerers lived in Europe
or Asia at that time lol.

Anyway, good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Hi :)

For the multimedia issue to do with video please first work through this work-sheet
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu
This usually fixes most multimedia issue or at least makes them a lot easier to solve. If it doesn't solve the entire problem in one go then i would ask a new separate question about it
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+addquestion
perhaps also at
http://www.linuxquestions.org

For the printer problem all i can think of is making sure that you have "cups" & "hplip" installed, that usually sorts problems out but i would definitely post a separate new question about this too
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+addquestion
perhaps also at
http://www.linuxquestions.org

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Can you help with this problem?
