Is there an Epson SX105 printer driver for 8.04???

Asked by Peter Strassheim

I have just bought a new printer, scanner, copier and cannot get it to work at all.

Is there a printer driver available for this printer yet?. I cant find one in the 8.04 printer selection.

The system does not seem to find one on the printer CD.

I have tried to download one from the Epson website, but can only find one for the SX200. I tried to download this but cannot get it to install --- the files appear in the "downoad centre" but will not load -- its probably me, but it has worked before.

If there is not a specific driver available at the moment, is there any other driver available which will work i.e. allow me to use my new printer??

Also quite often just installing the "cups" package is enough as it includes drives for most printers and such. Just go up to the top taskbar and click on

System - Administration - Synaptic Package Manager

it asks for your normal user password, not your SuperUser/Root one. then use either search tool to find "cups", if it's installed already there will be a gren blob beside it - otherwise right click and install it. It might be worth also clicking on "Mark all Updates" while you're here and finally click on "Apply". If it is already installed it might be worth choosing "Reinstall" from the right-click menu.

If it's still not working it might be worth rebooting the computer and choosing the boot menu item that has "Recovery Mode" at the end of the title. Most of these options are worth running about once a month.

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Hello Mark,
I tried the installation as described by "thraxy" but it did not work. I got the same fault readout as given by "CK1" (I also am running the 64bit version of 8.040.

I also tried installing 2 CUPS programs but these do not work either.

The system recognizes that there is an SX105 and builds up a print queue but does not action it. It also gives a message that the printer may not be connected

Best Regards
Peter

Hello Tom,
I have tried adding the 2 printer driver CUPS programs that are listed (found by searching for "cups").
but I still cannot print.
The system sees that the SX105 is there and builds up a print queue but does not print out. It also puts up a message saying that the printer may be disconnected,

Best Regards
Peter

Hmm, there should have been more than 2 packages when you installed Cups. Which were the 2 that you got? Did you get them from "Add/Remove Applications" or "Synaptic" (both read the same servers, lists and databases - both are good)

I found a little package called "eggcups" that sounds like it shows print status like the system tray icon in Windows i think. This link might help but notice that it is on your machine, not on the internet, so we cant see what it says in yur case. Hopefully there should be something helpful there

http://localhost:631/

The link at the bottom to http://www.cups.org does take you back onto the internet again. As you can tell i found this pretty interesting - surfing around on my own machine! lol

Hopefully something there helps
Good luck and regards from

Hello Mark,
Thanks for the continued help, however I am still struggling.

I had not downloaded the pips-common-3.3.0.tar.gz file before. I now have this unzipped and stored in my documents file along with the Installation file. I also have a hard copy of the Users Manual.

After reading the manual, I have uninstalled the printer from the GUI and unplugged the USB lead.

As suggested in the manual I then attempted to install the Installation file by double clicking on it then entering my root password -- the install started but came up with the same failure message as the last time.

I assume/guess the install file is meant to extract files from the source file during setup but nothing new happened this time??????.

What am I doing wrong/missing, apart from a lot of knowledge on Ubuntu??

Best Regards
Peter

Hi,

Well, there's a great guy called Szabó András who did all the hard work of testing Epson SX105 with clean installations of Ubuntu 8.04, Ubuntu 8.10 and Ubuntu 9.04. This makes life easier for everybody, including me. :-)

His battle with the printer is described here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cups/+bug/303511

Especially check out this remark: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cups/+bug/303511/comments/18

To summarize: install Ubuntu 9.04 alpha version from a LiveCD session to your harddisk. Ubuntu 9.04 alpha should support your printer out-of-the-box. That is what Szabó András did.

Hello Mark,
No not yet.
I installed 9.04, by first updating to 8.10, then updating to 9.04, but although it recognizes the printer, it still does not print.
On the 9.04 version I have 4 broken programs, which also seems to stop even an install from a 9.04 CD which I have made.

I am hoping to find out from the 9.04 help file how to repair my installation to-night,

Thanks for your continued interest,

Best Regards
Peter

Hi,

If your Ubuntu 9.04 LiveCD is giving issues, please compare the md5sum value generated by k3b (when opening the downloaded .iso image in k3b) with the MD5SUMS files on the http://cdimages.ubuntu.com website.

Once you have a correct copy of Ubuntu 9.04 burned to CD, please test your printer while in the Ubuntu 9.04 LiveCD session. So boot the PC using the Ubuntu 9.04 LiveCD and then test your printer.

If that works, then you will need to install Ubuntu 9.04 from the LiveCD session and not via an upgrade procedure.

Regards,

Mark

My System still does not read the 9.04 install CD, whereas a Windows laptop does???.

I decided to repair my system instead of another install and used Synaptic Package Manager to Repair /remove 4 broken packages and also to install all the recommended ones that were listed ( are these optional or should they have been installed automatically???).

After this the printer still did not work, so I used the Print Manager to install the printer again, which it did from the internal printer list which includes the Epson SX105 on 9.04. A test print did not work nor did any other print.

I ran the Print Trouble shooter and it came back saying that it could not make the printer work and gave a fault report which is attached.

Does this help or should I send this report to the 9.04 Developers?? if so How???

Best Regards
Peter

Hello Mark,
I tried installing 9.04 alpha 6, but my system would not even read the CD (or the old 8.04 CD I had used successfully several times before0.

My system was obviously in a bad way, so eventually in desperation, I formatted the hard disc using an old Windows XP disc and have now installed XP for the moment as this worked straightaway with my new printer.

I will probably give Ubuntu 9.04 a try when this official release comes out in April,

Thanks again for all the help from you and the rest

Best Regards
Peter

No apologies necessary, thanks for your help.

I have been using Ubuntu quite happily for the last year or so, mainly using the GUI, with no problem until recently. The main problems I find are downloading some programs is a bit variable in success, probably depending on the source (and me).

I will try a dual boot system when 9.04 comes out in April, cheers,
