Brother HL-730 prints infinite junk

Asked by Bill

I've had this problem for three Ubuntu releases. Enough is enough. When I try to print using Ubuntu 8.04 and a Brother HL-730 Plus printer the output often looks like this:

%-12345X@PJL
                 @PJL ENTER LANGUAGE

This kind of stuff gets printed out forever on every page until I cancel the job and power down the printer. Occasionally, when I restart the printer it will start to work ok as long as I print the test page first, but usually when I turn the printer back on it goes back to printing garbage.

I use a USB cable to connect the printer. I installed the printer with the default driver using the simple steps in the Ubuntu printing utility. I've found others with similar problems and have reinstalled everything as instructed, but the problem persists. It looks to me like the printer command is being printed instead of the content of what is supposed to be printed. What is going on? What should I do?

No one responded for 15 days. Is this in the wrong forum? Is everyone stumped?

Update Manager installed a CUPS update this week, but it made no difference. I tried reinstalling my printer and it still printed the same kinds of things. So I'm still using my Windows machine to print.

I went to the CUPS site and opened STR #3088. Maybe someone there will know what to do. Is there anyone else I can turn to for help?

Here's the response from the CUPS forum:

[STR Closed w/o Resolution]

Please contact your Linux distributor for this issue.

This is an Ubuntu-specific printer driver problem.
