Printer Freeze

I'm using ubuntu 12.04 and using printer cannon ir 2525 and ir 2870. my problem is that most of time when i send something to print my system completely freezes,i mean nothing working not even alt+crtl+F2 .i tried installing latest driver but no good.
i 'm open to suggestion.
Also with pdf files the ubuntu default pdf reader is unable to open most of my scan files so i installed adobe reader9 but when i try to take print the adobe sends a very huge file to printer and then system frizes i mean for a file of around 1mb the adobe sends a file of around 9 to 10mb to printer. any suggestions ???
