problem printing using MFC brother 440cn (ubuntu Lucid lynx)

Asked by diyako

Hi, I'm running ubuntu10.04 and trying to print using MFC brother440cn. The printer is recognised by the system and the USB port is fine. When I send a document to print, the printer displays: ' receiving data', but it never prints or cancels a job.
On the list of printers, there are many brother printers but non of them is the model (440cn) that I have.
Could some one please help.....

Did you install the driver from the Brother site?

Can you give the output of:

uname -a; lsb_release -a

Thanks

you'll need to go to the brother site and download the printer driver for your printer

just google" brother printer linux driver"

Thank you for your interest in responding to my problem. As you suggested I went on Brothers website and downloaded the driver for my printer: MFC 440CN. But unfortunately it did not resolve my problem!! I tried to download CUPs and LPR and in both cases a message came up saying I already have the latest version.
When I plug in the USB cable from my printer it says brother printer is missing. the printer is recognized by the system and a green check mark is above it.When i'm asked to find a printer, there are many brother printers in the list but not MFC440CN....it still shows on the printer screen that data is receiving but it will not print anything...

Delete the printer in the printer dialogue, then reboot with the device attached and powered. If it doesn't automagically install then go through the motions of adding a printer. Hopefully a fresh one will make it nicer

Can you give the output of the command I gave. I asked quite plainly but you never gave the output and the question expired....

If you can give the output, I can advise

Can you help with this problem?
