Ubuntu does not recognise my Canon pixma iP1000 printer and I can't find a driver

Asked by Angela Hamilton

Hi,
I am new to Ubuntu and I am trying to get my printer to work. It is a Canon pixma iP1000 and when I try to add the printer, it is not shown in the driver database. I tried searching the web to find a driver, which I did. After installing it, the driver showed up in the list of available drivers, but when I tried printing a test page the following error message appeared:

"There was a problem printing [x]: stopping job because scheduler could not execute a filter"

I tried the Troubleshooter and at the status messages page it said there were status messages associated with this queue. They were:

The printer's state message is 'filter "/usr/lib/cups/filter/pstocanon bj" for printer "canon-ip1000" not owned by root. Warnings are listed below: printer 'canon-ip1000': 'cups-insecure-filter'.

At this point I thought it best to uninstall the driver because it clearly wasn't getting me anywhere.

I could not find a .ppd file on my original driver cd so no joy there either.

Please can you help me get my printer working?

Thanks

" I tried searching the web to find a driver, which I did." Where did you get the driver and how did you install it?

Have you seen? e.g. http://all-about-ubuntu.blogspot.com/2009/01/pixma-ip1000-printer-driver.html

Hi, thanks for responding.

I found the driver at http://all-about-ubuntu.blogspot.com/2009/01/pixma-
ip1000-printer-driver.html

I guess I must have downloaded it from there and then followed some onscreen instructions to install it.

I have looked at the web page you quoted, however the instructions don't make much sense to me, not being used to working with command lines and suchlike. Do the instructions really mean I need to create a folder of the name and in the location specified and then download the files into that folder?

Working solution for lots Canon printers and multifunctions is described here: http://ubuntuportal.com/how-to-install-canon-printer-driver-for-linux-ubuntu/
All Canon printer drivers also will be included into official Baltix GNU/Linux software repository - http://ftp.akl.lt/Linux/Baltix/Baltix-Ubuntu-packages/
See bug #959043 for more info.
