there must be a graphic interface otherwise you won't be able to see anything. this interface can be a distinct graphic/video card or may very well be on an integrated chipset. if you type in a terminal

lspci

command, (l above is lower L) the video interface will be shown in the output of this command. please copy/paste this output here and for sure somebody will help you further.

Hi,

Here is your graphic card:

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82945G/GZ Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02)

What you probably don't have is 3D acceleration, but the graphic card works --otherwise you could not see anything on your screen. Is the package xserver-xorg-video-intel installed on your system?

Hi raghu,

You should be able to use compiz-fusion and see the 3D desktop cube using your specific graphics card.

I recommend installing all the following packages:

i fusion-icon - tray icon to launch and manage Compiz Fusion
i compiz - OpenGL window and compositing manager
i A compiz-core - OpenGL window and compositing manager
p compiz-dev - OpenGL window and compositing manager - development files
p compiz-fusion-bcop - Compiz Fusion option code generator
i compiz-fusion-plugins-extra - Collection of extra plugins from OpenCompositing for Compiz
i compiz-fusion-plugins-main - Collection of plugins from OpenCompositing for Compiz
p compiz-fusion-plugins-unsupported - Compiz Fusion plugins - "unsupported" collection
i A compiz-gnome - OpenGL window and compositing manager - GNOME window decorator
p compiz-kde - OpenGL window and compositing manager - KDE window decorator
i A compiz-plugins - OpenGL window and compositing manager - plugins
i compiz-wrapper - OpenGL window and compositing manager, wrapper script
i A compizconfig-backend-gconf - Settings library for plugins - OpenCompositing Project
i compizconfig-backend-kconfig - KConfig Settings library for plugins - OpenCompositing Project
i compizconfig-settings-manager - Compiz configuration settings manager
v gcompizthemer -
i A libcompizconfig0 - Settings library for plugins - OpenCompositing Project
p libcompizconfig0-dev - Development file for plugin settings - OpenCompositing Project
i A python-compizconfig - Compiz configuration system bindings

Then run the following command to start up the fusion-icon applet in your Gnome panel:

fusion-icon --no-start

After starting up fusion-icon, right click on the fusion-icon applet, choose "select window manager" and choose "compiz" to switch to compiz-fusion mode. You will probably need to configure the 3D settings using the fusion-icon "Settings Manager"

Mark
