how i update signature of virus scanner through command line

when i go through the virus scanner,in the menu help,selecting update defination,it tells that "you must be root to install update"...at the starting ..i entered username as root and password to log in it tells that "the administrater not allow to login from this screen"..is there any command through which i can update the virus scanner?I am using ubuntu 8.04 hardy.

now i installed new version,but still getting problem.I go through the clamav document.I entered some of the command instructed by clamav and i got the following result.please advice me further,what to do?

It looks like you need to edit the example freshclam.conf file and save a copy to /etc/clamav/freshclam.conf.

Somit,

Looks like you need to edit the /usr/local/etc/freshclam.conf file to match your environment. I'm pretty sure that the comments in the freshclam.conf file will give your some idea of what needs to be edited.

ok, I found the problem. Just edit the file and put # before example. That will fix your problem.
