what does it mean to fork

when i go to do update a message comes up internal error need to fork i installed kubuntu 9.04 from a disk can anyone help me so i can update my system, {i need my firefox} phil..

try:

sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get upgrade; sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

     Otherwise, 'forking' is splitting into separate processes or threads, which can then be set up to intercommunicate. Think you are looking more for the answer provided by actionparsnip, though.

Fork is like a fork in the road, one becomes 2. The ooutput of my command will help identify whats going on as stupid gui apps like synaptic are really good at hiding the fine details which are actually needed to resolve issues.
