Can you provide the output of:

sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get upgrade

You have given very little information. Useful stuff would be:
What the actual error is
What you are trying to uninstall / install to generate the error.

Thanks

Don't worry about being confused. Just try Synaptic Package Manager instead of "Add/Remove Applications"
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SynapticHowto

Please tell us if Synaptic opened and stayed open? Where you able to use one of the search tools to find the program you wanted? Did it fail to install the program too? Did it give an error message?

Thanks and regards from
Tom :)

Ahah, if you are ok using a command-line then this might be a better option! Close Synaptic and Add/remove. The command-line is usually better than the gui's ;) Now try

sudo dpkg --configure -a

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Umm, it did install on mine so i wonder if there's one of about 5million tweaks i might have made that maybe affected that. What package are you trying to install?

If you are really new to Ubuntu have you run through all the steps in
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu
yet? I would keep the non-free components tho as they seem to help quite a lot!

It suddenly gets a lot easier after you have completed the entire install process and got almost everything working. you're nearly there i think but not quite. The medibuntu page helps a lot :)
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu

Have you ever installed Windows, that really makes all this look incredibly easy! At least with Ubuntu you have as lot of programs already working right from the start, like OpenOffice and stuff. lol :)
Good luck and regards from

oh thats not good. linux-image-xxxx is a new kernel trying to install.

You could do it this way to maybe kick it into touch:

cd /var/cache/apt/archives; sudo dpkg -i *.deb; sudo apt-get -f install

Personally I would download a Juany ISO suitable for your system and install that. You will have newer system files which may make things nicer

Was Ubuntu pre-installed by a shop or did you or a friend install this? If it was done by a shop then i would avoid reinstalling over the top for a little while.

Have you tried emptying your wastebin and gone into your email program and emptied the wastebin in there? When you are booting up the machne does it give lots of options for booting into Ubuntu?

Sorry lots of questions again
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Hi :)

Have you been able to try the new Ubuntu 10.04 before it gets officially released?
http://www.ubuntulinux.org/testing/lucid/beta2
Trying it as a LiveCd or as an extra dual/multi-boot would be ideal. Developers and everyone are keen to try to iron out any problems before 10.04 gets officially released so you might find faster & more effective answers to your bug reports which would make 10.04 work better on your system for you

Thanks and regards from
Tom :)

Can you help with this problem?
