Browser wont open, wireless connection option disappeared.

Asked by ron2099

I am using a Dell mini 9 which only has a few gigabytes of memory. I would download updates regularly. One time during an update, the memory became full and the computer froze. When I turned it off and on again, the wireless option dissapeared from the network options and the internet browser would not open. I tried using a wired network for the internet. It would connect fine but the browser doesnt open so I couldnt use the internet anyway. I tried to fix it myself using the answered questions on this website. I typed in "sudo apt-get purge network-manager-gnome" and it replies "dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem." Then I tried " sudo apt-get install network manager-gnome" and it said the same thing which was "dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem." Please help. Thanks.

Ded you freed some space on your hard disk in order Ubuntu to work? It should be the first step in my opinion.

You can try

sudo apt-get autoclean

or (autoremove) or both

or

dpkg --remove

in order to remove unused files/packages an free space. Read carefully the output during operations to see what is going to be removed. If not sure answer with "n" (no).

But first you can look at the manual for this programs to know how they act.
man apt-get
man dpkg
.
Good luck!

Before running any of those successfully you'll need to go up to the top taskbar and click on

Applications - Accessories - Terminal

into the terminal/command window/console type

sudo dpkg --configure - a

the "sudo" command will need you to enter your normal user password, not your SuperUser/Root one. Just out of curiosity when you are booting up your machine do you get a few different options for booting into Ubuntu or does it say "Press "Esc" to enter boot menu"? Anything like that?

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

I think recovery mode is difficult to access on a Dell Mini9 so after doing my "sudo dpkg --configure - a" then Vihar's answer would probably be best :) If space is a serious issue then try emptying the waste-bin and open the emailer and clear that one's waste bin too - hopefully then my answer will work but you might need to try Vihar's way before mine will work. Just try one way and then another until something works is often the best way to solve this.

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Tom and to ron2099:
It is simplier first to try in Recovery mode that option.

After that it doesn't fix the problem you, our friend ron2099, ask for a help. There are "excellent people" here, like Tom said, and may be one of them/us could imagine your problem.
Just ask, don't hesitate to. That's a place for questions isn't it?

Why some people are shy to ask, Tom? How do you think?

Can you help with this problem?

Provide an answer of your own, or ask ron2099 for more information if necessary.
