software sources , synaptic package manager updater and add remove dont work

Asked by wright86

Hi,
I have just installed ubuntu 8.10, update manager said there were 242 updates but when I pressedinstall updates is just says reading package infomation then does nothing. I have managed to update via a terminal but there are 8 updates left in the update manager that I cant install, I am new to all of this so I am trying my best.
I also cant add remove programs, the window opens but when I choose some thing and appy changes I just get a message sayin instalation failed.
software sources and synaptic package manager wont open, the screen goes funny for a moment then just back to the desk top, I haven't had any error messages.
Please can some one help?
Thanks
Matthew

Hi,
While the update manager is working none of the others package managers can be used.
Wait for the update manager finish the update and then try again, unless you receive a error message or the computers hangs.
Another thing that may be happening is that the system is waiting for a reboot.
Hope this helps, let me know.

Hi,
Thanks very much for your reply!,
update manager now says that there are 8 updates, there were 242 but I used sudo apt-get update in a terminal and re botted and that sorted most of them, they would not install from update manager, and the 8 remaining there dont come up the through the terminal, and wont install through the manager.
when I press the install updates button,
scren with admin pasword
then the screen kind of goes in to big pixels,
then box reading package infomation
then it just dissapears and that is it,
it is good to know that the other thing arnt supposed to work, I did ask on the ubuntu forum yeterday but have had no reply.

Ok,
I'm sorry, but I must to make this question:
When asked, which password do you give? (you must give the password you used to log in).

Have you tried running from command line? Open a terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal)
 sudo apt-get update
 sudo apt-get upgrade
when asked for a password, gives yours (the you used to log in)
Hope this helps, let me know.

Ok, firstly I must appologise for wasting your time, I though I had tried logging in with my pasword previously but I thought it was rejected so I assumed ( bad thing to do) it was like in windows where the admin pasword has been left blank and you just hit return, but trying my pas word again it has just worked and cleared the rest of the updates.
I did use the two commands sugested but they wouldent clear the last 8 updates.
Thanks again
Matthew
