I wont' claim that anything I did solved the problem, but later last night, two things changed. First, Synaptic loaded 42 of 42 lists (earlier, it had stopped at 40 of 42, or 36 of 38...you get the picture). Meanwhile, Update was clamoring for my attention for the first time in three days. I still got the error message (or nearly the same one) from Synaptic, but the packages were all there (including the one I'd specifically been looking for to no avail), and the update process went smoothly as well.

Today, there have been no further problems. I suspect that something was going on at the server end of things, and Synaptic wasn't finding what it expected to find. As evidence, I cite the errors and the sudden presence of 7 files vital to the continued health of my OS.

Thanks to those of you who took the time to respond. Since I hadn't changed anything (which made those errors look strange - I hasn't specified those directories in Sources), I did not follow your advice, but it is sound nonetheless.
