Hi

Try downloading the full Kubuntu iso and make a new cd. Backup your data by either saving all your"/home" folder to cds/dvds or else make a new partition on yur hard-drive and move your /home folder onto it. Then install Kubuntu 8.04 (or 8.10) but choose "Manual" partitioning instead of "Guided" or automatic. Make sure you have UNticked "Format Partition?" for every partition so that nothing gets wiped. This is trick(ish) because it's crucial to make sure that every partition is carefully looked at to make sure that the "Format Partition?" is not ticked. Then continue with the normal installation and hopefully everything should still be just as you left it except that you can update/upgrade easily from there onwards

Good luck with htis

Important tho is to go for "Manual" partitioning rather than "Guided" or automatic as you can then make sure you UNtick a box for each partition that says "Format Partition?". If you manage to find and ensure the "Format Partition?" option is unticked for each partition then the upgrade wont wipe your data or destroy your menu's or anything - it'll just upgrade.

Good luck with this and sorry i couldn't get a better answer to you faster yesterday.

Ps the error occurs because 7.10 is no longer supported. I think it is possible to cange the repositories to read the newer ones but it's not easy. Good luck

I've already embarked the new issue as a separate question known as "libxine1 error" in amarok package
