From the Terminal type

sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
It will ask you to type in you password, when you type it in you will not see anything.

Add this following line to the end of the file.
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/googlegadgets/ubuntu hardy main
Save this file and exit.

Again from terminal type
sudo apt-get update

If this fixes your problem, mark it as solved

The second to last line is missing a forward slash and you can get rid of the comment. Please modify it.

Please change
deb http:/ppa.launchpad.net/googlegadgets/ubuntu hardy main #to synaptic

To
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/googlegadgets/ubuntu hardy main

Also could you tell me
Was 8.04 installed from CD or was it upgraded from Gutsy 7.04?
Did you ever install xubuntu, kubuntu, edubuntu bases on this machine?

Thank you

Looks like the file did not save properly, please take another look.
You must open the file as root. Type

sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

The last 2 lines should be:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/googlegadgets/ubuntu hardy main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/googlegadgets/ubuntu hardy main

Also you should comment out all the ling with Gutsy Gibbon in the beginning. You can do that by adding the symbol # to the beginning of the line.

For example
# deb cdrom:[Ubuntu 7.10 _Gutsy Gibbon_ - Release i386 (20071016)]/
edubuntu/dists/gutsy/main/binary-i386/

After you do this. Save the file. Then type
sudo apt-get update

Hope this helps
