update problem
Hi, I have got a message on my computer to say that my update information is outdated.
I have tried to use the update manager but when I click on the "check" icon I get an error message saying that it failed to connect.
I am on a university internet connection. Is there any other way of downloading the updates?

Hi, Henry.
Open a terminal (Applications -> Accesorries -> Terminal)
and issue this command:
sudo apt-get update
It will ask for your password. Type it (it won't show any asterisks).
Paste the output here.

Probably there are some problems with your internet connection. There may be traffic shaping or something else. If you do not have a connection to internet, you can download manually all the needed packages and place them to /var/cache/

May be you have a proxy on your network.
Please tell, are you able to visit: http://
Please try with Ubuntu and with Windows.
If you are able to visit only with Windows you are under a proxy.
You must install and configure cntlm or ntlm proxy package on your Ubuntu pc to get full external access.
Hope this helps
Thank you
