I experinced the sameproblem on a pc i ran xp on, was dell 4550 dimention intel chip with nvidia graphics 64mb on chip. i never bothered to fix problem but suppose it was the driver for the graphics card. if you change your driver it should work. or you could try a different moniter, the driver that was used when installing did not have enough setting in the system setting to get the correct resolution needed. i would try a windows driver with wrapper or different moniter if your system is 10 years old. if you try this with luck please post back. good luck

This turned out to be a problem with monitor resolution. After getting a monitor with the ability to adjust to the right resolution, all the icons and search bar in Dash appeared.
