Alert /dev/mapper/vg-root does not exist. dropping to a shell

I've successfully installed the latest (13.something) version of Ubuntu. When I remove the USB and reboot, I get to the enter password screen. After entering the password I get this alert and dropped into the shell. I restarted from the live USB trial version and followed the package manager troubleshooting list of commands. It gave me this terminal output:

I suggest you comment out the install CD as an install media as a source of packages. You have a web connection so it's not needed.

What is the output of:

ls /var/lib/dpkg/status*

If we can get you updating, it may help things be ok

Problem solved. I didnt enter the correct password to unlock the hard drive when my system first booted up but it did seem to let me into my computer which seems strange. But when i restarted and entered the correct unlock code and password the issue went away.
