Unable to download and install updates
Hi Team,
I'm unable to install the recently released security updates (45 updates, 74MB). I did not get any pop-up about updates being available for almost a week, so I tried to run the update manager - and to my surprise - I found security updates and many more in the list. Now, when I try to click on "install updates" it gives me the below error with an option to click on "close" and "Details":
"Requires installation of untrusted packages
The action would require the installation of packages from not authenticated sources".
"Close" option takes me back to the main page to install updates, and hitting on "details" gives me:
gcr gir1.2-
Request your help at the earliest as this is my main PC and I see security updates pending. Also, the error about installation of packages from "not authenticated sources" is kind of eerie to me.
Regards,
Jim

Why have you added the Gnome3 team PPA, you already have Gnome3 in Precise. You can import the key you missed with:
sudo apt-key adv --recv-key --keyserver keyserver.
But you already have Gnome3 by default in the release. What posessed you to add the PPA????

Hi,
To be honest, I have no idea about what I have added. I just wanted to
know how gnome3 looks. So when I went to some forums it gave me few
steps, and I blindly followed that.
Now, when I executed the command that you gave, I get the below result
and the updates are still not working.
jim@Megadeth:~$ sudo apt-key adv --recv-key --keyserver
keyserver.
[sudo] password for jim:
Executing: gpg --ignore-
--secret-keyring /tmp/tmp.nPGWA1S2UB --trustdb-name /etc/apt/
--keyring /etc/apt/
--recv-key --keyserver keyserver.
gpg: requesting key 3B1510FD from hkp server keyserver.
gpg: key 3B1510FD: public key "Launchpad PPA for GNOME3 Team" imported
gpg: no ultimately trusted keys found
gpg: Total number processed: 1
gpg: imported: 1 (RSA: 1)

Hi,
As you know Unity and Gnome are different, and 12.04 comes with Unity as
the default desktop. I wanted to try gnome as well and wanted the option
to select gnome at the login screen.

Unity isn't a desktop, it's a shell for the Gnome desktop

Hi,
Oh,okay. Thanks for that piece of information.
So in practice, I wanted gnome 3 shell along with Unity shell. I
installed Gnome and it's working fine; however, after working for a
short duration, I decided to use Unity shell because that's comfortable
for me. But now, I'm getting all these errors when I run an update.

If you want gnome shell install the gnome-shell package. Did you not think to search the software centre before adding random PPAs...... think about it.....

Hi,
I'm sorry, but I'm fairly new to Linux. I used to have Gnome before, and
the new Unity environment took time to grew on me.
What can be done now that is my whole point? Please help. :)

Unity isn't a replacement for Gnome, it simply replaces gnome-panel. Unity is a shell, not a desktop environment.
I suggest you run:
sudo apt-get install ppa-purge
sudo ppa-purge ppa:gnome3-
sudo apt-get clean

Hi!
Thanks once again, that worked. I now have 13 updates, and I have
installed them successfully.
Just curious though, I still have two doubts:
A. How did you know from the result of "sudo apt-get update;
lsb_release -a" command that I have some wrong entries?
B. What was that key (F1773AF13B1510FD) I had imported?

Also you are using Precise which ships with Gnome3 by default...
