12.04 upgrade problem

Asked by abcd wxyz

Problem with 12.04 upgrade (previously had 11.10 running in dual-boot config under Win XP). Upgrade got as far as "Installing Packages" stage then hung. Tried to shut down but could not so hit power button. On re-starting PC and selecting Ubuntu, it goes through initial stage ok but then hangs before login screen. Any assistance very welcome, only been using Ubuntu for a few months so novice stage!!

Did you uninstall drivers before updating??? One fix might be to put in the live cd you used to install and see if you can reinstall it. I know this is a drastic solution but there could be many problems as to why it failed -broken packages for example. You could try mounting the / partition via live cd and running sudo apt-get autoremove
Hope this helped

thanks for reply. No, I did not uninstall drivers before updating. I did
original 11.10 install from Ubuntu website so I don't have a cd. I think I
might be able to get to cmd line on boot-up so I could possibly try running
sudo apt-get autoremove. As I've only been using Ubuntu for a few months as
a trial (along with XP) then if I have to go back to a clean start it's not
the end of the world - thanks again

It might be useful if you can get a live cd or live usb for the future. You say you did original install from website -do you mean you are running under wubi?
If not then it should be fairly easy to troubleshoot the problem. The easiest way to get around your problem is to :
Ensure that you have backups of your files.
Then you will need a live cd somehow.
To be honest just clean installing 12. 04 might be the quickest way round unless you have a lot of programs installed. To backup your files you could (again a live cd helps (try to burn it from another computer or something) mount your home partition and copy it. - that should backup your files - not programs though. Then just click install and you can reinstall 12.04 without any more partitioning..
If you really can't get a live cd I can post one to you if that would help :-)
Any questions just ask :-)

If you do have a wubi installation, please ask more questions. If you are not sure, pleas ask. A wubi installation is VERY different from a partition installation. If you have valuable data in either Windows or Ubuntu, you need to rescue this before going any further. A live-DVD or Ubuntu will be essential to you.

Today I installed Ubuntu 12.04 (precise) for the first time on my computer. I did wubi installation on my E drive. I am unable to update because of following error :

E:Unable to parse package file /var/lib/apt/lists/partial/archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_precise-security_main_i18n_Index (1)

I am new to Ubuntu so may need solution in details. Thanks in advance.

try this: run them one by one

sudo apt-get autoremove

sudo apt-get autoclean

then try this: it isnt the same error but it might work

sudo mv /var/lib/apt/extended_states /var/lib/apt/extended_states_tmp

from ( http://sathyasays.com/2009/11/08/how-to-fix-e-unable-to-parse-package-file-varlibaptextended_states-1-error-in-synaptic-or-apt-get/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+SathyaSays+%28Sathya+Says%29 )
However I would strongly recommend that you at least consider installing it as a side by side installation--it is not difficult to do and provided you have backups nothing can go wrong. If you do decide to dual boot (also know as that ) then ill be happy to help sort out any problems you might have.

Wubi is not as good as a proper install

Hope this helps

Dear Anton,

Thanks for writing. I tried almost everything but couldn't solve the problem. I also installed only Ubuntu by formating my whole drive but problem persisted. I became frustrated of Ubuntu (it was my first experience). I am big fan of Open Source Concept. But this one disappointed me drastically.

May be in future I will try when such problem will not persist. Thanks a lot.

If you can't get ubuntu to work you may have more luck with Linux mint. Unfortunately this is the problem with open source, sometimes errors come up. Although I has been using linux for about a month now and it has worked for me so far. It sounds like a buggy disk you burnt. Try burning the iso image you downloaded to a dvd at the lowest speed. I understand that this can be very frustrating (dealing with errors when you don't really want to have any in the first place). I hope that you find something that works for you

Arnand, were you able to run Ubuntu from the live-DVD by booting into it without Windows running? If not please give a bit more information so we can try to fix the problem.

Can you help with this problem?
