can not install desktop for ubuntu 10.04 lts uec server,package not found error

i have installed ubuntu 10.04 UEC server in my laptop in order to create a private cloud for my academic project ofmy masters degree . i could only get the command prompt and not able to ge GUI .i tried the following
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
got the message that .. package not found
tried with xbuntu,kubuntu also same error

then tried
  sudo apt-get update
i got error mesage that some of the index file missing

what should i do to install GUI for my system?

Try

sudo apt-get update

then report errors here...

first u have to get drivers for ur graphics card maybe mesa
Then add xorg and at last add the desktop environment i would suggest go with cinnamon 1.4
