how do you find the version number of an application in Ubuntu?

The title says it all.
How do you find the version number in Ubuntu? I was running rhytmbox and I wanted to see what version it is and cannot find any info? where and how do you get this info?

Not only for rhythmbox, as terminal alternative, the 'Help -> info' in appmenu says it all.
For Precise, one can open HUD and start typing 'info', select 'Help > Info' which also displays the version.
