gimp installation fails broken packages

Asked by Barry C. Fuchs

after running ssoftware updates, my Gimp icon in Launcher disappeared.
System showed that it was no longer installed
Attempted to reinstall with USC, got messages indicating "unmet dependancies": as follows:

Depends: python (>= 2.7.1-0ubuntu2) but 2.7.2-7ubuntu2 is to be installed
Depends: python-gtk2 (>= 2.8.0) but 2.24.0-2 is to be installed
Depends: libc6 (>= 2.11) but 2.13-20ubuntu5 is to be installed
Depends: libfontconfig1 (>= 2.8.0) but 2.8.0-3ubuntu2 is to be installed
Depends: libgdk-pixbuf2.0-0 (>= 2.22.0) but 2.24.0-1ubuntu1 is to be installed
Depends: libglib2.0-0 (>= 2.24.0) but 2.30.0-0ubuntu4 is to be installed
Depends: libgtk2.0-0 (>= 2.20.0) but 2.24.6-0ubuntu5 is to be installed
Depends: libjpeg62 (>= 6b1) but 6b1-1ubuntu2 is to be installed
Depends: libpoppler-glib8 (>= 0.18) but it is not going to be installed
Depends: librsvg2-2 (>= 2.14.4) but 2.34.1-2 is to be installed
Depends: zlib1g (>= 1:1.1.4) but 1:1.2.3.4.dfsg-3ubuntu3 is to be installed

installed Synaptic, which also failed installation and failed to fix broken packages
tried: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PackageManagerTroubleshootingProcedure
no apparent results, attempt to reinstall failed again . . . :>(

suggestions?

So it looks like this is the issue:
Depends: libpoppler-glib8 (>= 0.18) but it is not going to be installed

What happens when you try and install it?
sudo apt-get install libpoppler-glib8

I got the same error. When I tried to install libpoppler-glib8 I get this:

Package libpoppler-glib8 is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source

E: Package 'libpoppler-glib8' has no installation candidate

So I tried installing libpoppler-glib8 and got the message:
"package libpoppler-glib8 is not available, but is referred to by another package. This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or is only available from another source
E: Package 'libpoppler-glib-8' has no installation candidiate "

BTW, I'm new to Ubuntu (all Linux, actually), so am a bit ignorant on procedures. 20+ years of MS/Mac experience doesn't seem to be a tremendous advantage in figuring this out . . .
On the road, so only have net access on Tuesdays and Fridays.

thanks for any pointers . . . :>)
