Can install flash or vlc and updates failing

Ok so forgive me as I am a total newbie when it comes to unbuntu, only got it today (its a temp fix for my laptop.
Im trying to install flash and vlc player but its not working. when i go to install flash in the terminal it says:

lain@lain-Satellite-C660D:~$ sudo apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree
Reading package lists... Error!
E: Encountered a section with no Package: header
E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/dpkg/status
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.

And when i go to install VLC it says:

lain@lain-Satellite-C660D:~$ sudo apt-get install vlc vlc-plugin-pulse mozilla-plugin-vlc

i was told to try and update it but all i got was:

1. Open a terminal by hitting CTRL + ALT + T
2. Insert and run this command:
cat /etc/apt/sources.list -n

Ok do this:
1. Open a terminal by hitting CTRL + ALT + T
2. Insert and run this commands:
sudo cp /etc/apt/sources.list /etc/apt/sources.list.backup
sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

3. In the upcoming window, change the first and the third line:
deb cdrom:[Ubuntu 11.10 _Oneiric Ocelot_ - Release amd64 (20111012)]/ dists/oneiric/main/binary-i386/

deb cdrom:[Ubuntu 11.10 _Oneiric Ocelot_ - Release amd64 (20111012)]/ oneiric main restricted

IN:

# deb cdrom:[Ubuntu 11.10 _Oneiric Ocelot_ - Release amd64 (20111012)]/ dists/oneiric/main/binary-i386/

# deb cdrom:[Ubuntu 11.10 _Oneiric Ocelot_ - Release amd64 (20111012)]/ oneiric main restricted

4. Close the gedit window and in the terminal run:
sudo apt-get update

Now try to install something.
