I assume you have a reason for not using the version of wine in the repositories? Otherwise, this might be a bit easier.

Each .deb has a list of dependencies that it requires, i.e. in order to run the bit of software you are installing now, it has shared components that it needs to be installed first. Normally your repositories are designed only to be self consistent, and hold a particular set (usually the latest available/stable) of versions for any particular bit of software. Your package manager (repositories, accessed through "software centre" or "synaptic") takes care of the installation of dependencies automatically.

So if you pick a random .deb of the internet somwhere, then it is (1) unlikely to have dependencies provided by your system, and (2), the way you are installing the .deb, would require manual installation of each dependency, as you are bypassing the dependency resolver.

Bottom line, go to the software centre, type "wine", then press install. Unless of course you know why you don't want to use the repository provided version (there can be good reasons, but most people would want to do this).

Can you help with this problem?
