gdm fails to update

Asked by Ken

Update manager tells me that there is a new version of gdm available but when I try to update I get the following....

W: Failed to fetch http://ubuntu.mirror.ac.za/ubuntu-archive/pool/main/g/gdm/gdm_2.30.2.is.2.30.0-0ubuntu5.2_i386.deb Hash Sum mismatch

I have tried several software sources all with the same result. All other updates are carried out without any problems. What can I do to resolve this problem?

Hi...

What happens if you open a terminal and type

sudo apt-get upgrade

Does the same message appear?

Sadly, yes. It does, however, make a suggestion. In addition it says "maybe run apt-get update or try with --fix-missing."

Hello Paul. I do believe my problem is a thing of the past. At the terminal, I did as you instructed. It did not work but, as reported, it offered me a "try this" which updated the system from 2.6.32-31 to 2.6.32-32. It also sorted the gdm upgrade. I have no idea how or why!

Unfortunately, my brightness has diminished rather badly over the years and I did not think to copy the whole result but, hey, it was 4am!

Thank you so much for pointing me in that direction.

Ken.
