Ubuntu PC to PC migration

Asked by Zilvinas Jonaitis

Hi there!

Sorry, for I believe well-known and recurrent question, but I could not find a link to well structured step-by-step How-to instructions. Please, link me to the right place or give the instructions.

My intent is to clone all currently installed packages/applications along with complete user data on PC1 (HW1) to PC2 (HW2) with fresh ubuntu installation. Both ubuntu installations are of the same version 11.04.

you can use partimage to make an image, then transfer to the other system. You can use partimage in live CD. Alternatively you can put the destination drive in the initial system and use dd or partimage to copy the data from drive to drive.

Is it safe to transfer image of PC1 with hardware configuration 1 to PC2 with hardware configuration 2 ? I assume that partimage holds hardware drivers of PC2 while destination PC should have different set of hardware drivers.

Correction to my previous comment: "I assume that partimage holds hardware drivers of PC1 while destination PC2 should have different set of hardware drivers."

Can you help with this problem?
