update problem

Asked by marcus aurelius

interesting problem today. i think i saw a posting of this before but can't find it.

i did an update about an hour ago via the update manager. there was a message that said all packages cannot be installed and that a partial update should be attempted to install as many packages as possible. after doing that, i did another update. there are other packages shown, but they are greyed out, so is the install updates button.

issuing sudo apt-get install update resulted in

Connected to the Internet, in a Terminal, try the following commands one-by-one:

sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo apt-get -f install
sudo apt-get --fix-missing install
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get autoremove
sudo apt-get update

Does that clear the problem or are you still having difficulty?

CLI is working now, however, it reports that packages are being withheld.

Update manager still does not work.

It seems lots of people are facing this problem.
The last 3 days I was being asked by frieds what's up with those ffmpeg updates and I don't have an answer for them, because dist-upgrade doesn't do the trick.

It's kind of a stupid situation, when you're basically being told that there's a security-hole but you can't do anything against it.
Sucks.

I can not find the answer. I am using Ubuntu 10.10 (maverick) on an AMD Athlon 64 3200+with kernal 2.6.35-32-generic
Gnome 2.32.0
RAM 3.9 GiB
HD 500 GB with 231.9 available
with Firestarter and HTTPS installed.

The Update Manager reports that "Nor all updates can be installed. It displays a dialog window that offers a partial upgrade. When this is attempted I am then requested to insert the CD for Ubuntu 11.10 to install applications from that CD. I have it. I place it into the optical drive and the dialog box informs me that my internet connection no longer works even though other uses of the internet connection still work when checked and there was not a problem until then, including downloading the updated applications. The update manager then stops.

Is this a fixable problem that Ubntu can handle or should I simply revert to 10.04?

I have installed 11.04 and 11.10. I was so displeased that I reverted to 10.10.

I keep hoping, but it looks more and more that I should simply revet to 10.04 and look for another distribution for the future.
