package install apt line
Trouble is I'm new to Linux and do not know how to ad a package repository to synaptic. All reading about this topic is more than confusing because nowhere is explained what the meaning of the parts is and where to find them.
deb okay it is Linux distro but where do i find the http:// and what should be the ending for a ppa.
I'm lost.
Naturally there should be a rule but all that is explained are how to install this?!? package but no basic rules like what is 1part where to find http and what means the last part like lucid aso.
Second trouble is naturally automated update that refuses to install needed updates of previously installed packages.
Since I like to learn Java and BlueJ they need to be added to the repository like several other things.
But what should be part 1 and why
What should be part 2 (Site? download directory? something else?)
What should be the correct ending (lucid? main? else?)
what is the meaning of the short descriptions like lucid aso. ???

The description is explained in the manual for the sources.list
you can get this by typing "man sources.list"
you can find *that* by looking at the apt-get manpage (its in the see-also, and is referenced in the text)
Here is a link to the online version:
http://
Have a quick look at that, then post back, as I am not entirely sure this answers your question, but may help us to respond to your questions a bit better.

Nice reading but still does not solve my trouble.
For example I choose a package with Software Center and it refuses to install the package because of untrusted sources.
I open Synaptic and like to ad the source.
To your reading it should look like deb-src http://
Is the URL the package download directory?
Like for Blender 3D http://
and should my apt line therefor be
deb-src http://
If so how can I find the ftp or http adresses for packages???

>and should my apt line therefor be
>deb-src http://
That is not a debian (deb) package, that is just a zip file somewhere with executable code in it for 32 bit chips. Debian packages have a very specific format, and include metadata about version information, other software needed to perform the install.
>s the URL the package download directory?
No, it does not work like that. The remote server needs to explicitly set up a package repository, which includes data about what packages are available, digital signatures and the like.
>I open Synaptic and like to ad the source.
Which source are you trying to add exactly, if you can provide the exact names we can give you the commands you need and explain how we get them.

Let us just start with my updates,
At least this is a small part of what update manager does not like
(Picture1),
Messages are like:
avahi-autoipd avahi-daemon avahi-utils firefox firefox-branding
firefox-
libavahi-
libavahi-glib-dev libavahi-glib1 libavahi-gobject0 libavahi-ui0
libpoppler-glib5 libpoppler7 libtiff4 libvpx0 libwxbase2.8-0 libwxgtk2.8-0
pm-utils poppler-utils python-avahi python-wxgtk2.8 python-wxversion tzdata
tzdata-java winetricks xserver-
Software Centers message when i try to install blender is:
Non trusted source
blender libftgl2
Synaptik does not like me either and is unable to retieve package info.
(Picture2)
Though this might be a bug, i am not too unhappy because ubuntu reminded why
i do not have to be afraid of viruses.
But be unable to install anything does not seem to be a solution.
Though whatever I do, i get a go to hell.
Any sugestion???
With best regards a dummy Ubuntu user named Marcus!

Go to the ubuntu software center>
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade
Also under ubuntu software center install ubuntu restricted extras. That should give you Java and much more.If you get errors after
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade
post output here.

My repositories are just lıke you asked and with the terminal updating was partially possible. Only a few medibuntu pages gave 404.
Since i was too quick closing the terminal I thought bootstrap.log output might satisfy you instead.

and before i forget,
you guys are just AMAZİNG,
since years i try to get rid of windows and you folks did it.
Whatever small trouble i do experience is nothing compared to Billy’s rubbish.
Thank you all.
The Ubuntu team and all others who work to make computers useful. Not just a saleable product, but enable people like me to enjoy and learn more.
After update via terminal, software center works normal again... just still i haven't understood where the pieces of the apt line come from and how to configure it.
Shit, ask me something about Horses i'm sure to have an answer but Computers??? Yep, basic knowledge!
Have a dummy, ask me!
Windows was since 98 my life!
You guys gave me hope and a chance to change my bad habits.
THANK YOU and all the folk that made linux and especially UBUNTU happen.
Marcus

You have got an error in the lines with respect to medibuntu in your sources.list
Please try the following to correct it:
Open a terminal (ctrl-alt-t) and issue the command
gksudo gedit /etc/apt/
This will ask for your password (please enter it) and then will open and editor window with your sources.list loaded.
Somewhere in the text there should be a line similar to
deb http://
Please change "10.10" to "maverick", that it looks like this
deb http://
Save the file and close the editor and then try the commands
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
again. If you copy all output of these sommand and paste it into a new message of this question thread we can have a look at it to tell you if more steps would be required to get your package management back to the state of running without errors.
It might be the case that you do not find any 'medibuntu' related line in the sources.list, in that case please close the editor without saving, issue the following command in a terminal and paste its output in a new message of this question thread:
ls -ls /etc/apt/

After changing sources list to your recommendation (instead of 10.10 => maverick)
I was able to update and upgrade the system via terminal with exeption of a few Linux packages wich I installed with the update manager. Everything seems to be just fine.
Thanks a lot for your help.
and even I said this before,
You Guys are just amazing and do a terrific job.
