broken package manager upgrade (bind9-host)

open a Terminal from the menu Applications->Accessories->Terminal and type or copy and paste from here a row a time then press enter:

sudo apt-get -f install
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get autoremove
sudo apt-get update

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

*sigh* This is just getting worse. I rebooted and now I see a login screen, but it doesn't have any user names or an option to type in passwords. I can access the accessibility and power options, but the shutdown/reboot options don't do a thing.

I cannot thank you enough for your help with this.

Going a bit more into details about the errors I see from checking your logs above.

Apparently there has been some corruption in the /var/lib/dpkg directory, leading to the situation that the 'inventory' information of the package management system lost some information (hence the error messages 'files list missing').

Furthermore there is something wrong in /usr/lib, leading to error messages with ldconfig.

The problem that the graphical environment does not correctly start any more might be a consequence of any of the errors above, but about that there is not enough information shown in your messages. Are there any errors or warnings in syslog or Xorg.log about that?

The issue with libbind9-60 seems to be solved with your recent activities.

I am not sure if it will be easy to solve the current problems, and I cannot predict if maybe even more errors will show up during the attempts to repair.
Therefore what I strongly recommend is that you make sure you have adequate backup of all your important files!!!

As a first step I would try to get the ldconfig problem solved.
Please issue the following command
sudo apt-get install --reinstall korganizer kdepim-runtime
and report what the result is.

For the minor issue with the warning about illegal characters in Config-Version for virtualbox: Do you have virtualbox installed? If you are not using it, you might issue the command
sudo apt-get purge virtualbox-3.0

More steps will have to follow to get your system to a status that the package management runs again without error messages.

I don't have that older version of virtualbox, but will take care of that when dpkg is working. :)

Try the following, hopefully we will get forward, step by step.

1. disable all ppa's and non-ubuntu sources (like google, getdeb, virtualbox, dropbox) from your sources.list (system-administration-software sources)
2. execute sudo apt-get update
3. execute sudo apt-get -f install
4. execute sudo apt-get install --reinstall korganizer kdepim-runtime
4. If the error messages you receive are similar to the last ones above, try
sudo apt-get install --reinstall korganizer kdepim-runtime libakonadi-contact4 libkdepim4 libkontactinterface4
(add those packages where a dependecy problem ist listed).

After googling, I removed python-aptdaemon-gtk's entry from /var/lib/dpkg/status and then was able to run:

sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude -f install
sudo apt-get install --reinstall korganizer kdepim-runtime
sudo aptitude install python-aptdaemon-gtk
sudo apt-get purge virtualbox-3.0

All of which succeeded. Now, I'm left figuring out how to fix the problem w/ the:

dpkg: warning: files list file for package `[insert app name here]' missing, assuming package has no files currently installed.

errors that show up when running apt-get or aptitude.

Almost there....almost there.

running:

sudo apt-get install --reinstall [list of packages that had missing files]

resulted in all of the packages getting reinstalled and no more missing files errors. :)
