impossible to open the desktop on ubuntu 10.04

Hello, i can't open the desktop on ubuntu 10.04 because i have made an update of ubuntu. I changed for ubuntu 10.10 but the installation was not successful because my administrator of gnome hasn't been completely installed.
So if someone have an idear ? Can you help me ?

Can you give the exact error message? The package name is critical.

Press ctrl + alt +F1 made login with your user and password then type:

sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo apt-get -f install
sudo apt-get --fix-missing install
sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get autoremove
sudo apt-get update

sudo reboot

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.
