apt-get connection failed after upgrade to 10.10

I had a perfectly working ubuntu 10.4 system and, I upgraded to 10.10.

Some dependency issues remain, and apt-get is not able to connect to the servers.
Internet works perfectly (I'm writing this in the affected computer) , I tried at least four servers in the repositories, but nothing makes it able to work.
I'm desperate. For instance, I work heavily in Kile but it does not show in synaptic...
I DON'T REALLY WANT TO INSTALL "FRESH" again... even if backed up, my "home" is 750 Gb full of years of photos, videos... It would take days to restore... and my finely-tuned system oooohhhh gone forever?

I'm not in front of the affected computer. I discovered that I fell in what I think are two simultaneous bugs.

I think I was actually using 2.6.35-22... in fact (see below), I solved the sed issue so now I actually am using it because the script managed to work.

With that proxy stuff, sudo aptitude update worked (it didn't find archive.canonical.com, though; luckily there was only the "partner" repository there and I had nothing installed from it; I guess that I'll need to change the "proxy" address for other servers launchpad, google, ...).

I'll check tonight whether restoring 01ubuntu to the original setting works now that all Maverick 10.10 packages have been suitably configured... It was 2 am, you know.

Yesterday at 2am I solved the "sed: error" issue because it was related to locale settings.
with "LANG=C sudo aptitude upgrade" the dependency problems were solved because sed did not get error. This seems to be a regression, because issues with "sed" and locales appear in

and it is bug 55440 whose fix was supposedly released on 2006-08-07. I added a reply on that 3-year old thread, just in case.

Let's hope this issue does not happen to all es_ES.utf8 people, otherwise ubuntu will lose many adepts. It took a long time to me in solving the combination of both apt internet settings and locale ones in order to finish the distribution upgrade. (third-party repositories still not done).

As I said above, I'll provide more information on the behaviour of the aptitude update issue (the original one in this question) tonight. As it stands now, I think that the workarounds with the "proxy" field and the "locale" stuff are not too neat to mark it as "problem solved", are they? (anyway, ubuntu developers might want to include lang=C in some of the upgrade scripts to help Spanish, Estonians and who knows ...).

There seems to be two issues. One is a sed or apt bug with the locales.
The other one, I don't know if it is a bug or some configuration file which got lost/not updated in the transition from 10.4 to 10.10.

uname -a outputs:
Linux antonio-desktop 2.6.35-22-generic #34-Ubuntu SMP Sun Oct 10 09:26:05 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux

reverting 01ubuntu in apt.conf.d to the original one, which was APT {}; brings the problem again... but OOPS!
running

LANG=C sudo apt-get update

succeeds in getting the package info!!!!
So, it seems to be, in all cases, a locale-related bug and not anything regarding the internet proxy settings.
I'll file it as a bug instead of a "question", because even if the LANG=C is a workaround, there is something in apt and/or sed which must be fixed, I guess.
