Asked by robert clark

I was just trying to free up some disk space on my HD and i put in and received the following errors......

luc1f3r_666@luc1f3r666-desktop:~$ sudo apt-get autoclean && apt-get autoremove
[sudo] password for luc1f3r_666:
E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11: Resource temporarily unavailable)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it?
luc1f3r_666@luc1f3r666-desktop:~$

Is there anyone that can help me solve this issue? This error message has come up several times when i'm trying to install updates onto my computer. if anyone can help me i would greatly appreciate it.

Do you have software centre open or are you installing updates. If so let them finish. If not then run:

sudo fuser -vki /var/lib/dpkg/lock;sudo dpkg --configure -a

Which will release the packages. if you want to recoup space you can remove ubuntu-docs and get 250Mb instantly. If you also remove old kernels you can get 120Mb per kernel. do NOT remove the current kernel. If you only use writer in openoffice you can remove openoffice (300Mb) and install abiword (12Mb) and save a whole lot more space

You can also install bleachbit and clean up your profile, make sure you have as many apps closed as you can so the files are not locked. Watch the settings for your browser or it'll clean settings you want and avoid settings which say they will take a long time.

Will free you up tones of space. You can also remove apps you simply do not use and free up space there too.

Can you help with this problem?
