package amavisd-new-postfix 1:2.6.5-0ubuntu2 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

Asked by Pushpak

Every time I install or uninstall some package in the end it gives an error saying installation (or removal of packages) failed. Fortunately, the package does get installed. Also, in between while installing, a window titled debconf (or debconfig perhaps) opens and closes many times (I can never see the contents in the window as it closes very fast, all I can see is the title 'debconf').

Not a package bug.

file or directory The value of variable $myhostname is "pushpak", but should have been a fully qualified domain name; perhaps uname(3) did not provide such. You must explicitly assign a FQDN of this host to variable $myhostname in /etc/amavis/conf.d/05-node_id, or fix what uname(3) provides as a host's network name! (failed). invoke-rc.d: initscript amavis, action "restart" failed. dpkg: error processing amavisd-new-postfix (--configure): subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

IMHO an invalid hostname should not basically render the entire dpkg/apt system useless. It is unfair to expect an end user to be able to troubleshoot this.

What is the function of your computer? Are you using the mailserver, insofar as you know? If not, then you could alter the startup script (cue other people cringing) to do nothing but say "success". This would be a nasty hack, but it may "fix" your package manager for now.

Yes I use the mail server. And I don't wish to take risks. Can removing some
package (whichever is causing trouble) 'completely' using Synaptic help fix
this?

ok, if you are using the mailserver, you probably need to change your hostname to be an absolute domain name (FQDN), as suggested by the error message. Then run the update again. The problem is that the amavisd cannot operate with a partial domain name.
