More sound issues with ASUS AT3N7A-I Motherboard

Asked by emilio

I have an PC with an ION based ASUS AT3N7A-I motherboard with Karmic.

Both Optical and Analog outputs work out of the box however there are issues with multichannel HDMI output.

HDMI audio device is recognized, and, if I plug the HDMI cable directly to my TV, I can get stereo audio (my TV does not support multichannel)

However, if I plug the HDMI cable to my AV receiver (a Sony STR-DH800) no audio source is recognized.
I have tried with stereo, DolbyDigital 5.1, 5.1 PCM and all the rest (Note that the video bypass over HDMI is working)

Also if I use the Optical output with the receiver I can get audio, although I am limited to 2 channel PCM by the bandwidth of the Optical connection.

I have tried to upgrade the alsa-driver to 1.0.21 and 1.0.22 following the instructions in http://xbmc.org/forum/showthread.php?t=59877 but it does not make any difference.

I have also tried to upgrade the Nvidia driver from 185 to 190 and 195 but still no change.

At this point any suggestion is more than welcome.
