Mark,

I appreciate you looking into this and I don't wish to waste your time.
I am running ubuntu 8.04.3, Heady Hern. I've attempted to be pretty
regular at keeping the system up to date.  I noticed that the mail indicates
that there is a newer verion ( 9.x ). Should I update to this version 1st before
you dig into this?

Ray

Mark,

Thanks. Just a couple of "stupid questions".

When I launch the application, I use the volume button and have moved it to various
levels and not gotten any responce. I have checked the speaker icon and it doesn't "seem"
to indicate that it is in "mute" mode ( I've toggled the settings back and forth ). When I get back home tonight I will start the session up and look for other muting options on the application that I could have missed.

Since I am not overly familure with the app. is there an area I should be looking closer to?
i.e. Some option settings, maybe in setup, or options, or perferences that I should review?

Thanks
Ray

Did you check all the volume channel settings in gnome-alsamixer as I suggested?

If gnome-alsamixer is not installed, you can first install it using the following commands:

sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude install gnome-alsamixer

gnome-alsamixer should be able to clearly indicate which channels are muted.

Mark,

Installed gnome-alsamixer ( shows up under "Sound & Video" options ),
but did get the follower error when it loaded:

Bad key or directory name: "/apps/gnome-alsamixer/display_mixers/": Key/directory may not end with a slash '/'
Bad key or directory name: "/apps/gnome-alsamixer/display_names/": Key/directory may not end with a slash '/'

I tried to find the directory using the find command:
ralvarez@Abacus4:/$ find / -name gnome-alsamixer -print
/usr/bin/gnome-alsamixer
/usr/share/pixmaps/gnome-alsamixer
/usr/share/menu/gnome-alsamixer
/usr/share/doc/gnome-alsamixer

Got this result, so not sure where this directory. I get the above error
each time I open the mixer app. Of course it goes without saying that
there is no sound ( fix b to solve a ). Its been a long time since I worked
with a Unix like system and it brings back memories.

suggestion: I could back up personnel files and reload to latest version
if you think that this would be cleaner.

Thanks

Ray

Your PC is experiencing the following bugs:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-alsamixer/+bug/184768
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-alsamixer/+bug/461003

First perform a backup of all your personal data, including everything in the /home directory.

Then perform a clean install of Ubuntu 9.10. If you have separate root (/) and /home partitions, then only format the root (/) partition during the install.

If sound still does not work after installing Ubuntu 9.10, please send us the full Terminal output from step 3 and step 4 from this procedure:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshootingProcedure
