You do not need to enter all those cryptic commands. Just disable the Si3054 Modem (56k modem) by going to system->administration->hardware drivers and disable it.

After disabling the 56k modem, sound should work.

Mark ...i did it and it works ok ...Thanks for your help...
What about the other 2 problems i have referred to?
1. keyboard (the section with the numbers does not work)
2. USB UCV 2.O WebCam is not recognised

Thanks again for your valuable help ...it seems that i will keep Ubuntu on
my laptop...
