Realtek ALC883 line input not working 9.10 Karmic Koala

Asked by penmanchris

Hi,

I am using a Realtek ALC883 High Definition Audio on an Advent K4000. Since upgrading to 9.10 Karmic from 9.04 I am no longer able to receive sound through my line input, although the internal mic works fine. I have checked alsamixer and the pulse audio volume control and everything seems to be unmuted and turned up.

I attempted to follow the ALSA upgrade instructions linked to in Step 1 of the Sound Troubleshooting Procedure but wasn't able to download the .tar files from the alsa-project. Instead following a suggestion in the comments of that article I ran "sudo aptitude -y install alsa-driver alsa-lib alsa-utils alsa-plugins alsa-tools linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic-generic" in a terminal.

This has only partly upgraded my ALSA version, the library version is still stuck at 1.0.19.

Any suggestions to what I should do next would be greatly appreciated! Many thanks.

Please see below for my bash alsa-info.sh --pastebin output:

Marco,

Many thanks for your suggestion. I have tried it out but had no success. I
have unmuted and turned up everything but still cannot receive a signal
through my input. Also, when I load up GNOME Alsa Mixer the box which says
Input Source is always unticked. When I tick it, nothing happens, but
strangely when I close and re-open the program the box has un-ticked itself.

Any other ideas? Do you think I need to get rid of Pulseaudio? I would
really love to get my input working again.

According to the ALSA output from step 3, your mixer controls show that the following channels are muted:

Simple mixer control 'Mic',0
  Capabilities: pvolume pswitch
Playback channels: Front Left - Front Right
  Limits: Playback 0 - 31
  Mono:
  Front Left: Playback 0 [0%] [-34.50dB] [off]
  Front Right: Playback 0 [0%] [-34.50dB] [off]

Simple mixer control 'Int Mic',0
  Capabilities: pvolume pswitch
Playback channels: Front Left - Front Right
  Limits: Playback 0 - 31
  Mono:
  Front Left: Playback 31 [100%] [12.00dB] [off]
  Front Right: Playback 31 [100%] [12.00dB] [off]

So unmute and increase volume on the 'Mic' and 'Int mic' channels in alsamixer or gnome-alsamixer

In alsamixer, if there is a 00 under the volume bar, it means the channel is active. If there is an 'MM' under the volume channel, then it is muted!

Mark,

Thanks for taking the time to have a look at this for me. The Mic channel in
alsamixer had 00 underneath it but it wouldn't allow me to move the volume
bar up using the cursor keys. It remained stuck on 00.

However, I have been able to fix all my sound problems by upgrading to ALSA
1.0.21 using the method outlined at this website:

http://www.webupd8.org/2009/11/ubuntu-karmic-upgrade-alsa-to-1021-from.html

If anyone else has had problems following the upgrade procedure on the
Ubuntu site they may want to try this instead.

Once again thanks for your help.
