Try upgrading alsa to newest version and reboot and retest sound.

gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

When the file is open, add the following 3 lines to the end of the file after "options snd-pcsp index=-2"

options snd-hda-intel model=hp-hdx

Save/close and reboot.

Then retest sound again

I added lines and rebooted, but still no sound from the speakers. (Checked the volume control in the Gnome Alsa Mixer).

Then retest sound again using this hp-m4 model option

I kept the change from yesterday in the file "/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf":

After a reboot there is now sound both in the headphones and the speakers. Thanks for the help.
