no sound new user live cd ubuntu 9.04 audigy 2 gateway e-4100 desktop

Asked by nastajus

Can't get sound to work. Card works perfectly in Windows XP. Using Ubuntu 9.04 live cd. Hardware is Audigy 2. Gateway E-4100 desktop. Comes up in sound preferences as audigy [unknown]. Tried clicking Test on every popout combinations, none work. Just progress bar moves back and forth.

I believe I am using the wrong model for my chipset. I get lost trying to follow instructions. Trying to figure out what codec uses, I see is AC'97, which confuses me. I expected audigy or sound blaster or something. Exactly where I got stuck is below.

I followed the instructions at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting. (Not muted and Volume is up). System does recognize card (I **guess so**, it says Audigy [unknown] after all). Does have sound modules installed. Physically installed (as mentioned works perfectly in XP).

All's okay until the codec step. At this point I find AC'97 criss crossing back and forth between the two documents. Not finding anything else useful. Can't really do anything since AC'97 isn't in those popouts.

Am a new user of linux.

Only can get mother board beeps, which is useless.
Tried toggling switch analogue digital output jack. nothing.
Sound maxed in windows before loading. nothing.

Hi :)

If you are using Ubuntu only as a LiveCd
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCD

then each time you reboot your machine all the settings will be lost unless you are using a Persistent Image.

Given that everything except sound works would it be a good plan to install Ubuntu as part of a dual-boot?
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WindowsDualBoot

There are a couple of other trouble-shooting guides
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems
and this new one that a couple of us are working on writing at the moment
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshootingProcedure
feedback about this last one would be appreciated but please be gentle with us ;)

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Tom,

Persistence isn't working, and I can't try the Debugging method as I need Persistence. Also I have another problem with Debugging method. I'll have to get back to you in regards to the TroubleshootingProcedure.

Specifically,

When I add the persistent argument it won't boot. I followed the instructions you linked Tom. I have a 4gig USB stick I formatted to ext3 as per the steps at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCD/Persistence When complete, I keep getting this error.

Error: The ubuntu splash screen just keeps moving the little box thing back and forth, never fills out progressively rightwards for 2 whole minutes. And, now there's no CD activity, it's entirely idle. (except 1 second at beginning). Then splash ends, a black screen appears empty for like 2.5 minutes. White text begins appearing:
[ 158.694006] end_request: I/O error, dev fd0, sector 0
[ 196.798184] end_request: I/O error, dev fd0, sector 0
[ 196.798239] Buffer I/O error on device fd0, logical block 0
[ 234.902079] end_request: I/O error, dev fd0, sector 0
[ 234.902124] Buffer I/O error on device fd0, logical block 0
[ 277.317822] end_request: I/O error, dev fd0, sector 0

then it keeps adding this every roughly 40 seconds, repeating in this manner. I saw no point anymore and hit alt-ctrl-del.

When I omit that argument, all is normal. The cd spins normally, the progress bar fills out normally, the Ubuntu boots normally. Just, lack that critical persistence. All my test customizations gone.

By the way,

the usb is named casper-rw, and it appears with a little x in the top right corner in ubuntu, but can't be read in xp (as I expected due to ext3 file system).

And,

I can't use options command. When I use
options snd-usb-audio index=1
It just says command not found. I added sudo in front, still not found.

The debugging method looks promising. I saw my Audigy pushed to 1. But I can't try it without persistence.

Lastly,

As a newbie, you can understand my hesitation to not mess with my only stable system's partitions until Ubuntu is stable.

Also,

Tom I see you've been involved in over 2000 questions. You must love Ubuntu. Why got you into it? I'm in it for computer science in university, I'm going into year 2.

Hi :)

I just got increasingly frustrated with Microsquishes 'Customer Support' and general lack of support but the thing that was really driving me up the wall was the slowdowns and getting trapped into the constant "upgrade cycle" with even fairly new machines being no good for anything but the scrap-heap. Also with so many companies making such huge profits from supplying "anti-virus" and other security i began to get suspicious about why everything was still so incredibly insecure in Windows. Just blaming the user and making them insecure and paranoid in order to turn a healthy profit doesn't seem very honourable.

Windows gives freedom FROM choice but linux (and other *nix) offers freedom OF choice. While there are a huge range of distros out there running the internet backbone and small hand-held devices, even watches as well as specialist distros running routers and even getting dusty old P2's working with wiifi, bluetooth, usb ... there are other specialist distros catering to countries other than the USA! Places like Spain, Turkey, China and others have governments developing a distro for use by any of their people that don't understand american language/culture - and usually a whole range of other distros being developed by people who don't want to use the government's one. All these use the same folder structure, the same commands and often the same packages/programs as each other! Learning 1 gnu&linux even only slightly well helps you understand a huge variety of very different scales of operations in the computer world. Ubuntu is really superb because it usually 'just works' (but not 'just' as it's usually excellent) in the way 'plug and play' was meant to. Ubuntu gives people an easy way-in to the linux world allowing you to further push your knowledge boundaries or settle in for a movie and quicker, safer surfing. It might not be the most pure nor the lightest or fastest distro but it is excellent on most normal desktops and it has the most accessible support non-commercially. RedHat might have better business support for commercial organisations, governments and for super-computers but Ubuntu supports normal desktop users a lot better.

A few links that i found interesting
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Antivirus
http://blog.ofset.org/ckhung/index.php?post/098a
http://www.guadalinex.org/noticias/noticias/lanzamiento-de-guadalinex-v-6-la-definitiva
http://distrowatch.com/?newsid=05541
http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=pardus
http://distrowatch.com

Hopefully by helping a few people that have initial troubles with Ubuntu, some of them will help others and so on, some might become developers but all will help make linux be perceived as something less and less geeky and more normal, for normal desktop machines.

Of course i can understand your need not to mess with the only currently stable OS on your system. I wish more people would be a bit more sensible like this! Even at the server end i have found people completely hosing their Server OS and replace it with something they have no knowledge or experience of! Even on a server i would say that one crucial stage of the migration process (for the machines and for the tech support staff) is to install it as a dual-boot so that you can (if forced by inexperience) flick the switch and get back into familiar territory very fast.

In roughly similar circumstances i 'rescued' a rubbish old 10Gb hard-drive from a scrap-heap machine and replaced my shiny new machine's hard-drive with it to play around with installing and trying out linux. Then i only had to swap drives back to get Windows back. To be fair the 2nd or 3rd old drive i did this with had WIn98 so i was able to get a dual-boot going with Wolvix Hunter
http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=wolvix
and their installer was so superb that i suddenly understood the install process and then i found ubuntu which was much easier to install than Mandriva (too many options during install) :) Windows doesn't transport well between machines on a hard-drive. Linux is often completely fine with it. Windows kept saying "Found new hardware" with the last 2 bits it 'mysteriously & surprisingly found' being the monitor and mouse that i had been using the whole time lol.

Of course now Windows has better support for virtual machines so you could try setting up a virtual machine and install ubuntu onto that. Virtualbox is the most common vmware found in most distros although you can use others of course. I think it has been ported over to Windows
http://www.virtualbox.org/
Also these links might help you migrate to linux at a safer pace
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SwitchingToUbuntu/FromWindows
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SwitchingToUbuntu
and may give you good options.

Something worth noting is that you might well be able to install linux as a dual-boot alongside your current install of Windows and then have a virtual-machine (or few) inside linux with the same version of Windows installed on one Vm using the same product-key or licence-code. Microsquish testing shows it's on the same physical machine so it has no trouble validating it! :)

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Hi again :)

Errr lol, all i meant to say in my last post was that all the errrors seem to be about "fd0" which is your floppy disk drive. If you could disable your floppy drive temporarily in your bios or perhaps even go as far as temporarily unplugging your floppy drive too then it might get past that section.

The cylon style bar going to and fro without filling the line is normal for most machines. If you haven't seen that before then i suspect you have very fast cpu or something.

When you bootup a LiveCd and use F6(?) to add boot-options (such as acpi=off & stuff) when you press "Esc" you can usually edit the boot command. I usually do that to delete "quiet" and replace that with "verbose" which is great for seeing what is going on during the whole bootup process, although it's very fast so it takes a few times before you can start to recognise name of things :)

Good luck and regards again from
Tom :)

I did use distrowatch to pick ubuntu. And I'm happy to get to know you. Thanks for the guidance. But this is getting way off track.

If you're the only person on the Internet who will help me, I'll try installing dual-boot at some point, will try whatever you say. That way should be more familiar, and you can thus probably troubleshoot better.

Let's just concentrate on getting sound to work. At least for the moment. Neither of us knows how to get persistence or options to work for me. Anyone else?

Ooops, sorry i think this has become quite an old question already and launchpad doesn't deal with old questions well. Please re-post it
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+addquestion
but keep it brief. You can always use this link back to this thread so people can get the info from here
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+question/81427

You might also want to try
http://www.linuxquestions.org
which is a good general lnux forum.

Also this link might help find something

Hi :)

Have you been able to try the new Ubuntu 10.04 before it gets officially released?
http://www.ubuntulinux.org/testing/lucid/beta2
Trying it as a LiveCd or as an extra dual/multi-boot would be ideal. Developers and everyone are keen to try to iron out any problems before 10.04 gets officially released so you might find faster & more effective answers to your bug reports which would make 10.04 work better on your system for you

Thanks and regards from
Tom :)

Tom!
Wow. You replied after so long! You're cool !

I am still using the same system as my primary rig, and
I've installed Ubuntu 10.0.4. I've used it straight for a few weeks, got somewhat familiar with it; I made various tweaks with my paltry unix knowledge. Still no sound! :( I've already given a fresh round of effort and and already given up again on my own ! LOL it's quite funny. I actually stumbled back onto this page, sifting through old messages. If you're interested to give a fresh batch help, still, I'd be very grateful for the assistance ! And I will follow all your instructions carefully.

From what I understand, from the commands I ran in terminal, the drivers for my audigy2 are installed and being detected, but not working, for some unknown reason. The system isn't muted, at least not the little icon in the upper right corner, which I understand to be good enough indication. When I read the ALSA page carefully, it said other Audigy2 models, like Audigy ZS or something were supported, but I couldn't find a plain straightforward mention of Audigy2 being supported. But regardless of that, the fact the Ubuntu installer knew to put the audigy related snd- drivers in, has got to mean something. That script I ran from the terminal listed from a hardware perspective all the things attached to the motherboard, and in the sound or whatever section (after like 10 intel things that meant little to nothing to me),

Sorry if this all vague or useless. I am hoping it's familiar script people often execute, and that as you seem to be familiar with this stuff, you'd know it. I'm just firing off this message now between tasks so I don't forget. I can tell you what script I ran if you want. I can also tell you the URL where it auto uploaded. If you want me to open a new question, I can do that. But I'd just as soon just keep going from this point.

Ian

Hi :)

Launchpad doesn't deal with old questions well. Please re-post it
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+addquestion
The problem with this thread is that i know almost nothing about sound so i just point people to the best page i know which has been updated quite a bit since you were last here
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshootingProcedure

Also these forums are worth trying
http://www.linuxquestions.org
which is a good general lnux forum. The other specifically Ubuntu site might be more helpful
http://www.ubuntuforums.com

Each forum runs slightly differently. I think the 2 i have just given "bump" threads when you post something new to them but Launchpad doesn't work the same way. When you have posted to those forums and reposted to Launchpad please could you post the urls into here so we can try to follow what goes on?
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Can you help with this problem?
