Again there seems to be an alsa issue. I guess that looking up the bug-report linked to that answers thread didn't help much? Here's the usual sound trouble-shooting guides

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems

Good luck with this

I was checking through d first link. There is nothing under "Loaded ALSA modules". I think this might be the problem. the report is in the page
http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=74eba1e29e39fb62bb4f3f8ffda21016e5067008

What to do now?

Seems like the system update changed my default audio control to pulse audio. I upgraded again to alsa 1.0.20, now the default audio control is Alsamixer and the sound works fine.

Do i have to do this each time there is a system update? is this a bug? can i assign alsa mixer as the default audio control without the need to re-upgrade each time?

Probably there is a config file somewhere but at least you have this work-around until you find it or someone else pops in with the answer. Also there seem to be a few troubles with alsa and sound generally right now so i would guess that in an update or 2's time a lot of this will start behaving as normal again.

Good luck with this

Tom, I too am going to use patience, that the problem will resolve itself with a near term release. Do hope the fix is in soon. Thanks.

If there's still a problem in maybe a weeks time then please re-post this as a new question, if you can wait that long (i'm assuming that you do at least have sound from using the work-around otherwise jkust post as a new question right now please``).
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+addquestion
Otherwise just post again sooner and give links back to this thread

Good luck and regards from

Tom, me again. I posted my problem as a bug at:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/397414
My problem persists and I'm still not sure what the root cause is, so reluctant to pursue solutions. Seeing how there's nothing as yet emerging from the technical community, I'm going to dabble a bit, along the lines suggested, and hope I don't make things worse. Regards.

Hi :)

Sorry to hear about that. I have just linked this question to the bug report but your url link in there makes it easier for some people. It might be worth re-posting this as a new question
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+addquestion

Also this link might help
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Signpost/Questions#help

and it might help to try a more general linux forum rather than just sticking to an Ubuntu specific one
http://www.linuxquestions.org

Good luck with this!

Tom :)
