According to lspci, your audio device is "00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio
Controller (rev 02)", so presumably it is detected and working.

Try opening the volume control, and check the mixer settings for PCM and Master. Make sure they aren't muted and that they are set high enough that you can hear them. It's not uncommon for the mixer levels to get set to zero between version upgrades.

Any chance you can boot with a LiveCD or a different OS just to test if the sound works under that? It would help rule out the possibility of a hardware problem.

This problem is explained with the following from troubleshooting

   1. The PulseAudio Volume Control application displays the error:
   "Connection failed: Connection refused";
   - the PulseAudio daemon is not running.

That is my problem and thats what the computer is telling me
Now how do I fix it?

I'm not really sure what's going on with your system. You might try re-installing pulseaudio using Synaptic or apt-get. It seems like at least one important file is missing from your system.

The synaptic is showing that at least 10 programs are not loaded I need to
know which is the missing one.
The default alsa sound is also not loaded

If you choose to install the pulseaudio package, it should bring along any other required packages automatically.

I wonder if your sound issue is related to the host resolution one. Have you recently changed the name of your computer?

If you open up a terminal and enter:

  hostname

it should tell you what the computer's hostname is. I would not expect this to have changed during an upgrade, but if it is different from what it was prior to the upgrade, try entering:

  sudo nano /etc/hostname

and replace whatever name is there with your original hostname.

Then reboot and see if either of those issues clear up.

I've started again from the thread,
It would appear that the pulse is loaded
roger@dell-desktop:~$ sudo apt-get install libasound2-plugins padevchooser
libsdl1.2debian-pulseaudio
sudo: unable to resolve host dell-desktop
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree

libasound2-plugins is already the newest version.
padevchooser is already the newest version.

Most things in Linux are case-sensitive. Is your hostname "Dell-Desktop" or "dell-desktop"?

Some people have reported unexpected changes to the /etc/hosts file when upgrading. (see http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=723361 for more details)

Are you familiar with that file? If not, please post the results of executing command:

  cat /etc/hosts

so we can look for issues. I know it seems like a tangential problem to your sound issue, but I have a hunch that bad hostname resolution could be causing issues with the pulseaudio sockets.

At this point, I think you should seriously consider a reinstall.

Short of that, you can try to force-reinstall all of your packages as described here:

As a complete novice that force-reinstall is confusing, with differing views
being expressed,which one is best?

Try just entering this at a command prompt:

   sudo aptitude ~i

That should do the same thing as the script, and it's a lot easier.

It's important that you back up any files you are concerned about losing before doing this. It's a serious operation and could take a while to complete.

on 3G network WHICH IS NOT FAST ENOUGH

I think I made an error, the command should be:

  sudo aptitude reinstall ~i

A large number of the packages should be in your local cache, so your network speed may not be as big of an issue as you think.

It did.nt seem to work using that command it just stated, that all the
packages were loaded,an error came at the end about linux-headers
-2.6.22-15-generic package cant locate file, have to manually load file, could
that be the problem
End as follows:

0 packages upgraded, 0 newly installed, 1456 reinstalled, 0 to remove and 0
not upgraded.
Need to get 569kB of archives. After unpacking 0B will be used.
Writing extended state information... Error!
E: I wasn't able to locate file for the linux-image-2.6.22-16-generic
package. This might mean you need to manually fix this package.

OK, well, that's my last idea.

My suggestion is that you create a new question titled: "PulseAudio volume control gives error 'Connection failed: Connection refused'" That's a more specific title, and it might attract the attention of someone who knows more about solving sound issues.

I'm sorry I can't be of any further assistance at this time. Good luck.
