Audio Problems with Ubuntu
I did an update for Ubuntu after setting up my new Toshiba Notebook NB100, using the Update Manager. Before doing the upodate, I had on-board sound. After the update - no sound.
When I clicked on the Loudspeaker icon (with red "no entry" roundel) I receive an error message: "No volume control GStreamer plugins and/or devices found".
How can I recover my on-board audio?
I tried the suggestion of typing "aplay -l" into Konsole (by the way, it took me some time to realise the "l" was alpha and not numeric!) and recieved the response: "aplay: device_list 205: no soundcards found".
I assume this is an error similar to the one shown on the FAQ's but with a different number. I am now no further forward; why did Linux recognise my soundcard before the update but no longer does so? I have no idea what soundcard is installed in my Toshiba Notebook or how to find out.
When typing "lspci -v | less" into a terminal, the Audio Device was listed as for the example in Troubleshooting but was missing the final "Kernel driver in use: " and "Kernel modules: " lines. The "Subsystem" is "TAIS Unknown device ff7b"; Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 11; Memory at d0000000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K]; Capabilities: <access denied>. I have been into the BIOS but could find no reference to a soundcard or audio facility, so could not enable it. The machine has not been subject to any physical disturbance since installing the upgrade to Ubuntu, so I can not see how the soundcard could have become unseated.
I repeat: everything was fine until I upgraded Ubuntu.
I have a Product Recovery disc and could run this in an attempt to return to the status prior to upgrading - is this advisable?
Regards,
Mike
